poem

To be honest, my favorite part in this class was about ‘Poem’.
So, I write one.

Reconsider

It is tough
A College life
Didn’t feel safe
Rather felt rough

I am
Slipping in the rain
Sinking in the drain
Thinking I’m insane

I feel like
Bike out of gear
Cat out of fear
Dog out of ear

But I make
Out of a cave
Thoughts out of brain
Best out of year

Hope it makes sense. I thought about this long time ago, around very beginning of the class but didn’t put it together until today.
And I am happy normal boy with a lot of friends. So don’t worry.

Epiphany

In the Story, Eveline is a young teenage girl who falls in love with guy named Frank. However, she is taking responsibility of other siblings because her mother passed away. So, she is like mother in her family.
She has a great dilemma which is staying with her family, keep taking motherly role for siblings, and live as she is. Or she can run away with her lover Frank so that she will have new life. Through out the whole story, she is most likely thinking about running away and has a new life. But her epiphany strikes her.
Her Epiphany was, even if she ran away with Frank. She will not be happy as she is now. And because she found out the fact that she can’t run away with Frank, she got stressed out. However, it kind of seems like she is forced to stay with her family, but she stayed because of her epiphany.

I choose Bianca for analyzing one of the characters in Taming of the Shrew. Like Baptista, also Bianca is a flat and static character. sHe doesn’t really chang over time or have huge impact on the story line. However, because of Bianca, Katharina gets to married with Petruchio since Baptista was paying a lot of money for Petruchio. I think her name symbolizes typical cute pretty girl. It sounds like it. However, even thou she seems really passive; she also has active site when she was kind of deciding secretly with three guys for marriage. At this time, rather than follow her fathers will, she was actually secretly dating with him. However, in here I think Shakespeare criticizing marriage culture in his society (getting married with out love but forced by parents) by Bianca.

stage setting

time line of the play:
marriage of petruchio and katharina

stage setting:
since there were no curtain or special effects back then, keep the stage clear and vague for
lot of situations.

as scene starts
calm music starts too

In the back(inner part, not off of stage) of stage many people are just chatting and talking each other. No one really say something out loud. Most of them wearing fine clothing
Baptista and Katharina stands on outer part. They speak their dialogues out loud so that audience can clearly hear rather than murmuring sound of the crowd.

new music, louder, little bit cacophonic, and restless
petruchio enters, crowd surprised, making louder noises. And petrushio goes toward outter stage. he dressed in worst clothing of all people. However, since it is a stage play, two people acting as horse(like puppets).
Katahrina and Baptista surprised.
They talk louder than crowds.

However, they getting married.
crowd chanting
new music, bit slower and more calm.

lights off, everyone move out as quickly as they can.

and new stage starts.

Taming of the shrew homework

I choose Baptista for analyzing one of the characters in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Baptista is a flat and static character. He doesn’t really changed or have huge impact on the story. However, he is the father of the two main female characters and he made story go forward (another word, he made story flows) by setting the rule that Katharina must get married before Bianca. He doesn’t really have any secrets or doesn’t provide any information that other characters may not know. However, he is rich.
His name is significant because I think he symbolizes old conservative church at Shakespeare time. Well, I think also Shakespeare wants to slightly criticize church through Baptista. He is conservative in a way that makes Katharina get married before Bianca. And also he tried to convince other people to marry Katharina by money other than try to change Katharina’s behavior. And I think this is related to church selling indulgence to heaven for money rather than truly work on religion like what church suppose to do.

Sympathy for Gregor....? WHY ?

When I First read the story, I thought Kafka was too mean to Gregor. And actually I felt sorry for Gregor. I had a lot of sympathy until I really read and started to think about the novel and trying to find Kafka's hidden message or something. After reading Metamorphosis more carefully and after actually thinking about what I just read, I got to the point that I don't have to fell sorry about Gregor. this tragic ending occurred because Gregor asked for it. In my opinion, Gregor symbolizes the people with extreme individualism. Gregor didn't even communicate with his family. Always locks the door when he is in his room, not even house. And I think Gregor's metamorphosis from human being to bug symbolizes how extreme individualist (Gregor) lost very primitive ability of human being which is communication and socializing so that Gregor is not even human being any more. After I got this thought and conclusion in my mind, I lost sympathy for Gregor and I think he was asking for his death. At least at the last moment he regretted how he acted to his family. Well... in that part, it was a very little, very very little bit of a sad moment.

"Not" just a story about a person turned into HUGE big.

For this entry, mine is about how Metamorphosis is not just a simple novel, story about man turning into huge bug. It is so complex and well written novel that has so much to study about and therefore it has been analyzed for almost hundred years.

Kafka’s Die Verwandlung, or The Metamorphosis, has sparked much critical interest during the past century because it is indefinable, complex and undeniably unique.
First Considered that metamophosis as simple story. nothing much to think about.
But Kafka's The Metamorphosis strikes me and I say this not only because the adult life into which you are entering will inevitably have its kafkaesque moments. Rather, with its exploration of identity, of belonging and exclusion, of tolerance and intolerance, The Metamorphosis raises many questions for people
Yet, the supernatural occurrences of the story are not uncommon in fiction. Tales of magical forces and unexplainable phenomena permeate the literary tradition of every culture, and Kafka continues and contributes to that practice. His unique combination of magic and mundanity seems to be responsible for the awe-filled reactions that the story inspires, for we are familiar with magical tales themselves.
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is Packed with symbolism, allusions and analogies The Metamorphosis has been interpreted in numerous ways. Although many interpretations of the story exist, as the title implies, the main theme of the story is that of a change and transformation: the transformation of the protagonist, his sister, his dad, his whole family structure and their attitudes toward him. However, Gregor and his family are not alone in their transformation - Gregor’s room changes as well. The changes in Gregor’s room echo his physical and mental deterioration because the room is analogous to Gregor’s state of being.
Important to see Kafka in context of the artistic and intellectual ferment going on around him
-Metamorphosis uses this idea to a certain extent.Sigmund Freud (1856-1939)PsychoanalysisOedipus ComplexUnconsciousDreamsFreud provided a method for expressing the “interior”
This may explain why something about The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is one of the most analyzed literary pieces of the 20th century.

Paragraph Revision

original content.

What is the definition of an 'angel'? Well there are many definitions for it. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is a spiritual being superior to humans is power and intelligence, an attendant spirit or guardian, white robed winged figure of human form in fine art, and many more. However, in 'The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings', the old man was an angel because a doctor determined that his wings were natural to his body, and also only good things happened after his arrival in Pelayo and Elisenda's courtyard. Also an old man didn't age but get younger and not only the Pelayo's family but all the people around them met an old man. He also got chick pox as he got younger and at last he disappeared. So, rather thinking that an old man is an imaginary character, he is an actual angel.

revised.

Angel in the novel 'The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings’ must be recognize as angel without no doubts. Also there can’t be assumption or points that angel must be illusion or hallucination because Pelayo’s family are not only people who saw an angel. He, an angle, had wings which determined by doctor that he born with. Usually human beings don’t have wings. Also he revived from the death, and clearly human beings can’t revive from the death. Lastly, he must be angel rather than something else because ever since he came, only the good events happened to Pelayo’s family.

I revised few major things.
First, I took out many Unnecessary words and sentences. I also took out the definition/dictionary parts. I fixed tone of the passage because last one was too casual. And I made my paragraph more concise and clear in both content and grammar.

Thesis statement

‘A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings’

A very old man with enormous wings was an angel because of these several reasons. Not only the family but also doctor who took care of him saw and examine the angel. After the angel came, only the good event happened, or at least, none of the bad event happened. Lastly, usually angels are the kids flying around God; fully grown angel is common misconception of the people.

picture doesn't really working.

this is link. But still not really clear.
I will find the way to do it.

Miss Emily's facebook

Please download the picture and view. it doesn't fit here.
This time, I made a simple outline of how Miss Emily's facebook would look like.
I think Miss Emily will have privacy setting on her facebook page. So that only friends(facebook) could surf on her webpage. Also, I don’t think she would have lots of friends in facebook because also in the story, she really didn’t have any friends other than relatives.
In photos, I don’t think Miss Emily would post many pictures of her. And because of her characteristics that hold on to the past, I think she might have pictures with her dad or Homer. And I don’t think she would have any applications in her facebook page.

I putted pictures of Miss Emily with her dad as the main picture because of she is always holding on to her past. So even if her father died, and gone, I think Miss Emily will post picture of her and her father like as if her father is alive. Also, I am leaving message as a black man because all the other people(not friends in facebook, like Brian Lee) would not able to see her facebook page because of privacy setting. And she might have left the relationship status with Homer Barron up even though she killed Homer. Like as he is alive, like past. And I think she might be socializing with little kids who were taking Emily’s China drawing lessons. So I made her left comment on one of her student’s picture of China drawing. And I left one comment of the druggist because in the story, it seems like druggist was worrying about arsenic a lot.

picture worth thousand words

When I read about ‘We Real Cool’ poem, it keeps remind me of a James Dean. I think this poem really suites well with James Dean’s image and life it selves. I am pretty sure that most people if ever played pool in MU, they recognize this picture, James Dean playing pool with Humphery Bogart and Marilyn Monroe watching them playing. Like in the poem, James dean was a pool player. And the entire image is really matching with James Dean. In the poem, characters in the poem really don’t have reasons to be real cool. So does James Dean in ‘Rebel Without a Cause’.
Like in the poem, James Dean was cool, real cool. And he died soon (1931~1955), like in the poem.

we real cool

I think this poem could be analyzed in two ways. Either don’t be cool, or be cool.
And this is depend on how individual understand (take) on the last line of the poem.
Let’s see line by line.

The Pool Players: yes they are cool. It is common concept that pool players are tough, cool, and guys.
Seven at the golden shovel: seven people who are real cool. This means group of cool people.
We real cool. We: poem starts out the fact that they are real cool. Not just cool.
Left school.
Lurk late. We
Strike Straight. We
Sing sin. We
Thin gin. We
Jazz June. We: these are the entire real cool things that they have done together.
Die soon : this last line maybe trying to tell readers multiple things.
One thins is that don’t be cool because you will sin, live like trash, and die soon.
Or in other hand, they(we) are so cool that they take death like nothing and they die when they are still cool so that they will be always remembered as real cool people.
However, this poem reminded me of James Dean and Kurt Cobain. And, I don’t want to be real cool. I will live long, and be just cool.

The Red Wheel Barrow

This is the type of poem that I personally prefer. It is short, simple, and easy to memorize but it makes you think.
However, I think the main theme of this poem is ‘how ironic life is’.
Here is the poem.

so much depends

upon

a red wheel

barrow

glazed with rain

water

beside the white

chickens.

I think first stanza is talking about how mankind or people depend upon other things in order to have life. In order to live today’s life, mankind depend upon so much things such as electricity, technology, media, and each other. All of us depend upon something.
However, I think second stanza is talking about how one must go through one’s own life despite of depending upon something else. Red wheel barrow symbolizes one’s life. One must carry on his or hers life themselves. One must depend upon others because red wheel barrow doesn’t go by it selves. But, no matter how many people pushing and pulling the red wheel barrow, the red wheel barrow must take all the stuffs in it and with it.
Third stanza saying glazed with rain water symbolizes the irony of the circle of life. When it rains, usually it brings feeling like gloomy, dark, cold, and feeling that unfortunate events are approaching. However, this third stanza saying that ‘glazed’ with rain water is complete irony because when people think about glazing, it is shiny, bright, and happy. So, I think this stanza is saying that because of gloomy events or after dark and cold times, shiny and happy time will come, and this event will go on and on.
Forth stanza is talking about how life is really doesn’t matter to other things. I think this stanza is saying that no matter what happened, happens, and will happen, white chickens will stay white. Well, after I heard that writer was a doctor and wrote this poem when he was watching her young patient (going to die) playing, this line is saying that even if some major events (even death) occurs, nothing will be changed and we all just have to carry on with that.
Well, those thoughts are just my personal thoughts and I might not be right at all. However, it is a great poem.

free writing

I want to write about forms we discussed in our class.
As far as I remember (if correct), in sonnet there are two types of forms, Italian and Shakespearean. So, I did little research about those two forms.
First, Italian sonnet is also called as Petrarchen sonnet. It was named after Petrarchen who was one of the greatest Italian poets. Italian sonnet is usually divided into two parts (a part in poem is called stanza). The first part has eight lines, and second part has six lines. Rhyme schemes are usually abba, abba, cdecde or cdcdcd. And because Italian has many vowels, rhyme scheme is suited. In other words, it is easier to make Italian sonnet with Italian language then other languages because of specialty in Italian language.
Shakespearean sonnet, is names after English writer Shakespeare. And Shakespeare sonnet is also known as the English sonnet. It has different between Italian sonnet. It has rhyme scheme as abab, cdcd, efef, gg. And last two ‘gg’ called heroic couplet.
However, today we still have sonnet and it is called modern sonnet. Usually today’s sonnet doesn’t really have rule of rhyme scheme or follow the forms of other sonnets. Modern sonnets are usually recognized by 14 lines or by the name only.

Characterizing two speakers in each poem

To be honest, I have little confidence in my characterization. But since I don’t have to worry about being “right”, here I start.
In “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” and “My Last Duchess”, both poem is the story that told by a speaker, also monologues.
However, I find speaker in “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” is speaking directly to audience (Me), and speaker in “My Last Duchess” is speaking to other person. The 12th line in “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” gave me evidence that he is talking directly to audience. And 5th line of ”My Last Duchess” clearly shows that speaker is talking to another person.
Well, I will characterize J. Alfred Prufrock first, who is the speaker of the T.S Eliot’s poem. J. Alfred Prufrock is a male, with a bald spot in the middle of his hair (line 39). And he also has various mental problems. He believes that he is some kind of devil or creepy being, in the very beginning of the poem, he talks about it. And he keeps imagining, or guessing about other people’s reaction, especially lady’s reaction to his questions. He is actually talking to himself, because he is assuming all the answers and responses of others. Also, he has extremely low self esteem on himself. All the evidences can be seen in lines 40, 43, 44 and 45. And in line 45, the word ‘universe’ indicates the room, where the poem takes place. Lastly, he is justifying himself that why he didn’t talk and sing a song for lady and already assume that it won’t worth the effort. In line 110, he is comparing him with Hamlet, dramatizing situation he putted into. Overall, I think J. Alfred Prufrock is an old male with bald spot in the middle of the hair, low self esteem, and slight mental illness.
Speaker of the “My Last Duchess” is also a male, Ferrara. However, whole tone and attitude that living in his ‘own world’, and not to communicate with others but to just telling, are same as Alfred Prufrock. But he is really different from Alfred Prufrock.
Ferrara is not talking to audience, but other person. First Ferrara started to talk about how beautiful painting is (line 2~around 13), after that, he is talking about how his ex-wife was flirting with other people (line 13~ around 47), and lastly he is talking about his future wife (47~56). In the way he talks, tone, and word he used were all very dominating, and demanding. In line 45, he didn’t say he asked to his ex-wife but he chose word ‘commanded’ to his ex-wife. And I got feeling from Ferrara’s way of talking that he killed his ex-wife because of jealousy. And for me, his ex-wife seems like a lady with a nice, warm heart (line 21~23). But Ferrara took that in a wrong way. Also, it seems like Ferrara is more interested in money and power that future marriage will give him rather than his ‘future wife’ it selves. Because in line 54~55 he only talks about bronze Neptune with taming sea horse, rather than talking about his future wife. Overall, I think Ferrara’s characteristics are power demanding, arrogant (tone), dominating, cold hearted, and jealous.

WOW

YEAH~

This is it...

so confusing.
